Perfectionism Is Not Profitable

For years, I thought that I and everything I did needed to be perfect. After all, my parents had told me I was a “perfect” child. Just because I was over 40 didn’t mean that anything needed to change!

So I’d write an article in less than 30 minutes – then spend 3 days editing it. Even then it would sit on my hard drive for another week or two, just “aging” like a fine wine – as if that would make it even better. Finally, several weeks after my quick 30-minute article was ready, I would submit it to an article distribution service – then sweat for weeks in fear someone might find fault with it.

Of course, I know “no one” else has ever had that experience!

So how much is perfectionsim costing you? After all, if you persist and insist on everything being perfect, it will take you 20 times longer to get the word out about your product; 20 times longer to create the product; and 400 times longer to make a profit! You see, the pain of perfectionism is exponential.

So how do you get over your perfectionism? Share your ideas here and we’ll all conquer this together!

Negativity and Success

One of the challenges we all face is the negative input around us. It was brought home to me today as I sat in a waiting room. Some of the comments I heard included:

“You just can’t win.”

“There’s never a solution.”

“I can’t believe how bad it is. Let me tell you…”

“That never works out.”

And I was there less than 10 minutes! I can tell you, I was depressed by the time they called my name for my escape.

Turns out I’ve gotten spoiled hanging around positive people all the time. People who are excited about life. Going somewhere. Have a dream. Sharing good news and great thoughts.

And those are exactly the type of people YOU want to be around as you’re building your online business. Starting a business from scratch is a lot of hard work and it’s tempting to become discouraged. That’s why it’s so important to be surrounded by positive.

If you’re surrounded by negativity all the time, it’s a challenge to find the positive. That’s why I love entrepreneurs – especially the ones online.

So where do you find the positive input you need to keep pursuing your dream? Right here, online. You’ll find many of them making comments below. You’ll find links to their blogs and websites. You’ll find them in groups like the Blog Challenge.

Because birds of a feather DO flock together. And positive people want to spend time with other positive people. Whether we do it online – or at live events – join us! Your life will be better for it.

Webinars That Sell: Choice and Reality

Warning: Rant Ahead

I know that I’m talking to a handful of my readers here, but you probably know someone who could use this information. Please pass it on. And as always, I would love to hear YOUR comments.

A friend of mine recently offered a webinar. It was a great webinar and she got a lot of very positive comments on it.

But she also got a lot of complaints. Things like

“You tricked us. I thought this was a class and it was a pitch.”

“How dare you try to sell something with that price tag!”

“I was shocked at the price. I cannot justify that price for a course for beginners when I already have experience.”

“I suppose that now that you have my email address you’ll start pitching me all sorts of offer.”

Let’s get real!

If you’re in business online, you should be interested in making money. You also need to recognize that other business owners are in the same business – making money. Here are five tips that will keep you in business without going broke.

1. Just because someone offers a product, doesn’t mean you have to buy it. If you don’t want it or it is not affordable for you at this time – don’t buy it.

The reason they sell Mercedes Benz is that there are some people who both want a luxury car and can afford to drive a Mercedes.

At the same time they also sell a Yugo – because some people want a smaller car and/or can afford a smaller car at this time.

It doesn’t mean that one is right and the other is wrong. It’s part of our free economy – people have choices.

2. If someone offers a free teleseminar or a webinar, assume they are going to make an offer at end of it. If they don’t, they are losing money and will be out of business soon.

Rarely can you find someone who offers one free event after another. Yes, some people “seem” to – but they are either broke or they are using other means to generate revenue.

3. If YOU offer a free teleseminar or webinar, you need to spend at least 80% of the time teaching good content. That way you deliver quality and “earn” the right to tell people how they can continue learning with you.

4. If you join a mailing list (which is always a voluntary action) and don’t like what they talk about or offer to you, unsubscribe. There is always a link at the bottom of every email that lets you do that easily. Be an adult and take responsibility. You are not a helpless “victim” of email being thrown at you!

5. If you listen to the presenter and take their information, please don’t stoop to complaining because they offer you a product. Yes, you can complain if you buy a product and it doesn’t live up to your expectations. But on a free event you haven’t paid a penny. It was a GIFT of information to you.

Remember, it’s always YOUR choice to sign up, to attend, to hang up, to unsubscribe – or to buy.

Internet Marketing Guru Bashing

There seems to be an attitude among many online marketers that “gurus” are mean, bad people. After all, they are making lots more money than the bashers and they are not giving their products away to everyone who asks nicely. So they must be big meanies.

Beware. Often the more vocal the bashing someone is doing, the less successful these bashers are in their own online business.

Don’t fall into the trap of believing all the bad things you read about the gurus.

Snow in Austin Texas?

There’s been a lot of news from Austin this week – unfortunately not good with the plane bombing of the IRS office. But this is lighter than what else you’ve heard. And a lot whiter. Enjoy the moment!

The Fast Track To Being Famous

Have you ever wanted to be famous? Not the “papparazzi chase me” type famous, but someone who other people within your chosen field recognize. Who, when your name is mentioned, everyone nods in recognition. Someone who can pick up the phone and call just about anyone in the industry and immediately get through?

That’s the type of “useful fame” that gives you an advantage over your competition. When you’re famous in this way, you are asked:

- to join more programs to promote others’ products which leads to early-mover advantage on affiliate fees

- to review products and give testimonials – which lead to your name and website showing on other high-traffic sites

- to co-create products as JV partners which helps associate you with other successful product producers

- for interviews which lead to more publicity and sales, which lead to more fame

Yes, it definitely pays to be famous!

So how do you get to be famous? I’ve done it in three different industries over the past 15 years – educational technology, professional speaking, and internet marketing. In each of those fields I became well-known in less than two years.

So I went back to figure out how it happened so quickly and predictably in all three industries. Based on my experience, here’s what you need to do to become famous quickly:

1. Read the industry publications. Not only do you want to read the technical pubs, but also the association news. You need to find out who the movers and shakers are in the industry. That’s where your name will appear in a short time!

2. Invest in your education. This may be taking courses, attending workshops, buying home study courses, buying special reports or books. But in order to be famous you need to know and understand the industry. So you need a good education.

3. Ask questions. When you’re on a webinar or a teleseminar, be one of the first to ask a question. If they ask for questions ahead of time, ask questions. You would be amazed at how few questions organizers get – and being someone who always asks good questions gets your name recognized.

4. Volunteer. Volunteer to take a poll. Volunteer to promote and participate in a fund-raiser. Volunteer to leave a testimonial. Volunteer to mail about a product or event. Just the act of holding your hand up helps raise you above the crowd.

5. Be there. Nothing takes the place of meeting someone face-to-face. Spending time with them. Sharing a meal and some good fun. You cannot pay for this type of relationship – it just takes time – and that time needs to be face-to-face.

Who is more likely to remember your name – someone you spoke to for 30 seconds before a teleseminar or someone you spent three days seeing at a conference? This is especially true if you went out of your way to introduce yourself, and to ask them to share a meal or drink with you.

You have three opportunities to attend face-to-face events in the coming weeks:

Internet Super Stars Conference in Orlando (Jan 15-17) I’ll be one of the featured speakers in this event, which features a lot of interaction with the speakers and hands-on activities for you.

Online Revenue Workshop in Las Vegas (Jan 22-24) Designed for people who have been online for six months or more and aren’t yet making as much money as they would like, this interactive WORKshop will teach you, then guide you as you create marketing materials that will propel your business to success in 2010.

Brave The Wave in Las Vegas (Jan 30-31) This is a brand new program from my mentor Armand Morin. And you can attend this inaugural event as MY GUEST – absolutely FREE. Just click to sign up with that special link.

Regardless of the industry you are in, you want to be famous. These five steps will help propel you there. It’s now up to you to take the Action to build your fame.
