Can I really make a living writing ebooks?

by Jeanette

Once people understand the power of ebooks and see ebooks really can create truly passive income streams, many want to jump in with both feet. They can visualize themselves writing (or publishing the writing of others) and marketing ebooks on a regular basis. In fact, they see the power to such a degree that they want to immediately do it full time. However, the answer to the question “Can I really make a living writing ebooks?” is a resounding “Yes, but!”

Yes, you really can make a full-time living with ebooks, but it won’t happen overnight just because you want it to. You must build a business around ebooks that will create the income you need for both the short and long term.

Also, you don’t really want to just make a “living” writing ebooks, you want to build a business around ebooks that creates financial prosperity. If you do it any other way, you’ll end up hating it and give up before you really ever get started!

Step #1: Understand This Takes Time / Building Process

FACT: Building a business takes time. But building up an ebook business takes about the least amount of time of any REAL business I know. In order to make it work, you need to start getting little successes along the way to help you build momentum.

Instead of publishing a full “book” in the beginning, consider publishing a series of short reports – “mini” ebooks – that will get people excited about you, your information, and what you offer.

This strategy will also help you quickly move on with Step #2…

Step #2: Build a Following

The most successful authors in the world (online or offline) enjoy a following – a group of people who can’t wait to read what they come out with next. Social media and email make it a LOT easier to develop and nurture a following. People can follow you on Twitter and Facebook and you can give them lengthier updates via email. You can announce upcoming books, events, and other news your fans will want to know.

If I had to narrow it down to one thing, “Building a Following” is really the key step to the entire ebook business building process (other than turning out high-quality content, which is a given).

Step #3: Develop Related Income Streams

People who make big bucks with ebooks have related income streams. Ninety-nine out of 100 do NOT make all their money solely from ebook sales.

Most would call this the “funnel” where people start at the top with the initial ebook purchase and work their way down through a series of offers. These offers include: videos, more ebooks, coaching, webinars, home-study courses, live seminars, consulting, public speaking, etc.

You don’t have to do them all, but it sure helps if you pick the ones that make the most sense for your audience and your goals for your business. For example, a lot of people are making really nice livings building up businesses around their ebooks and related coaching. People buy the ebook to get the information and then hire YOU to help them implement it.

Step #4: Wash – Rinse – Repeat

You aren’t going to do this once and then “retire!” Lots of people think you publish one book and live fat and happy off the royalties for the rest of your life. It doesn’t work that way. You build your ebook business up by using the “wash-rinse-repeat” method. That means you write another ebook and release it to your followers and then use that new ebook to gather NEW followers and expand your sphere of influence. Each new ebook creates new income, new followers, and new opportunities for back-end profits.

And the wonderful, beautiful, predictable cycle repeats itself over and over as you ride a steady wave of profits in your ebook business. By the way, if you’d like me to lay out the entire process for creating a business around ebooks, including Amazon Kindle, check out my ebook course.

How Do I Write an Original eBook if I Can’t Write?

by Jeanette

– by Jim Edwards

Twenty years ago, if you couldn’t write, you couldn’t publish a book. Now, with ebooks, the Internet, and all the available tools, you CAN create an ebook even if your 11th grade English teacher would faint (or worse) at the thought. In fact, it’s easier now than ever before. There are actually over a dozen ways to write an ebook that don’t include writing. Let me share one of them with you right now.

First, let’s define an “ebook.” An ebook:

  • Is a publication available online (free or paid)
  • Has a beginning, middle, and end
  • Is built around a central theme or a “big idea”
  • Contains at least 30 pages (500 words per page) of content
  • Has an author with passion and a purpose

So, with that as our definition of an “ebook” let’s go over a strategy for getting one done even if you think you don’t have writing skills.

Step #1 – Target Audience & Topic

What will your ebook be about? Who will buy it? Answer those two questions before taking another step forward. This creates focus for you AND your audience.

Next, you need a killer title. Here’s a formula that always works “TEN Questions Every ____ Needs To Know About ______” Example: “TEN Questions Every FSBO Needs To Know About Selling Your House Yourself!”

Step #2 – Questions List

Go find 10 of the most important questions your audience is asking about your topic. You can research those questions in a variety of places, including http://answers.yahoo.com and http://www.google.com/blogsearch. You need to come up with a list of 10 sexy, burning, and important questions your target audience really wants to know the answers to.

Make a list of 3-5 points that you would use to answer each question if someone asked them of you in a conversation. Don’t worry about writing out full answers. Just write down keywords and points that would guide the discussion.

Step #3 – Phone a Friend

Find a friend who likes to talk on the phone, is a good listener and is, preferably, a member of your target audience (or could be). Jump on the phone with them and explain that you’d like them to interview you for your new ebook. Explain that all they have to do is just ask you some questions and then ask you any clarifying questions they might have once you answer each question. Put them at ease and tell them that they don’t have to do anything other than talk to you on the phone.

Next, sign up for a free account at FreeConferencing.com and schedule the call with your friend. Have your friend interview you when you’re both on the conference line. Record the conference call using the free recording feature. When you’re done, download the recording of the call to your computer.

KEY: The call should last somewhere around an hour. Make sure to pace yourself so that, besides the introduction and conclusion, you spend about 5-7 minutes on each question. This creates a good balance in your content.

Step #4 – Transcribe

Take the recording of the call and have it transcribed. You can either do it yourself or hire someone to do the transcription. You can use a service like idictate.com or Fiverr.com to find a transcriptionist.

Step #5 – Edit & Publish

Tidy up your text. Look for any obvious spelling or grammar mistakes. Have a friend go through the text and give you their thoughts on content and anything you might have missed.

Voila! You now have an ebook… even if you think you can’t write. It might not win a Pulitzer, but it’s DONE and you can start using it to build your business.

By the way, if you want to get your first – or next – ebook done in a week or less, I can show you multiple strategies for doing that! You just CHOOSE the method that fits your style best, and then knock it out. Fast, simple, and easy! Check out 7 Day eBook!

Welcome Jim Edwards!

by Jeanette

Jim Edwards & Jeanette CatesI am pleased to welcome a new guest blogger – Jim Edwards! I’ve known Jim for more than a dozen years now. We’ve been on five cruises – The Jim Boat 2013 will be #6. We’ve attended multiple conferences – from the Internet Marketing Superconference to Big Seminar to Jim’s own conference, where I was one of the speakers. In short, we’ve known each other a loooooong time! (as you can see from the picture from 2006).  😉

Jim is an absolute expert teacher and coach. I’ve taken a lot of courses from him – and he’s one of the best! He’s a master communicator and deserves all the accolades he has earned over the years. His first claim to fame in the Internet Marketing world was for his 7 Day Ebook – so I was thrilled when he revised it and re-introduced it this year. If you write – if you teach – if you communicate at all online – you NEED this book. It is an updated classic.

I’m thrilled to have Jim with us as a guest blogger from time-to-time. So welcome, Jim!

Does it make sense to write about a topic that already has many ebooks?

by Jeanette

I actually get that question a lot. Most of the time it’s just an excuse not to take action, but sometimes it’s a legitimate concern. The fact is, it’s a great big world out there and no one ebook can cover every aspect of a topic.

And never forget: Ebook buyers are like regular book buyers! Serious people own multiple books about the same topic. Often, they’ll buy a new ebook just to find “that one new idea” that can turn things around or make their life easier.

Now, let me share with you two ways you can instantly differentiate your ebook from all the others and make an impact, even in a crowded market.

First, understand something very important.

With any genuine ebook (I’m not talking about PLR or bargain-basement, ghost-written tripe) the “magic ingredient” in that ebook is you!

You, that unique individual made up of experiences, opinions, and circumstances make your ebook unique compared to any other ebook in the world. Use that fact to your advantage and create a unique ebook that stands out in the most crowded marketplace.

Add your take and opinion on tools, events, tactics, and anything else important to your target niche. People love to get worked up by someone else’s strong opinions, even if they don’t agree with them!

Use your experience (or lack of experience) to help your audience understand both the big picture and the finer points of your topic. People LOVE to hear about other people’s experiences, mistakes, triumphs and results they got.

Adults learn best by example. It’s how we’re wired up as humans. If you can see it done or read about it getting done, it creates a framework that allows you to apply something new to your own situation. It’s easy to add examples to your ebook (even if at first glance you don’t think you have any). Use phrases like “In this situation, here’s what I do…” or “When this happens, I usually use this tool…” or “Let me tell you the story about the first time I…”

We often discount the power and importance of what we’ve done, mostly because “we” did them and they’re “no big deal.” But your case studies and examples for what you’re teaching them breathes life into your words. It also gives massive credibility to what you teach because it’s PROOF you actually DO what you teach.

Never neglect or discount the most valuable resource you can use to differentiate your ebook – your “self!”

The second thing you can do to stand out in any market, especially a crowded market with multiple competing ebooks, is to simply look at those other ebooks and ask some important questions.

What did they leave out? This shows holes and unfulfilled needs the market wants and will pay for.

What did they not explain fully? Not everyone has the same experience level. What’s obvious to one person is a complete mystery to another.

Where did they get it wrong? There’s a lot of BS in the world. Use your ebook to set the world on the correct path!

What alternatives can you share to get results faster, cheaper, or more efficiently? People believe there’s always a BETTER way to do anything. Show them how to do it quicker and easier and they’ll beat a path to your door!

SNEAKY TRICK ALERT

If you want to know what a popular ebook left out or didn’t explain very well, just go look at the Amazon reviews! Really popular ebooks evoke plenty of reaction from the target audience. Make sure to read the positive reviews to see what they got right, but, more importantly, read the negative reviews!

These negative reviews will tell you what the MARKET believes the author left out, didn’t address, got wrong, or just plain screwed up. These reviews are pure gold for you as an author if you just look!

Bottom Line: If possible, take a new spin with your ebook nobody else has taken, but understand that your unique, up-to-date, energetic perspective is the real key to selling your ebook.

By the way, if you want to get your first – or next – ebook done in a week or less, I can show you multiple strategies for doing that! You just CHOOSE the method that fits your style best, and then knock it out. Fast, simple, and easy! Check out my 7 day ebook!

Harness the Power of your Table of Contents to Encourage More Book Sales

by Jeanette

Dvorah LanskyEditor’s Note: I want to welcome D’vorah Lansky with this blog post on the topic of Digital Publishing, with you. She is sharing this article during the virtual blog tour, in honor of the Digital Publishing Virtual Summit, where we feature 20 world-renowned book marketing experts.

I’m excited to share this exciting topic with you and extend a warm invitation for you to enjoy each article and interview on this virtual tour as well as attend this virtual summit with us.

Your Table of Contents can be seen as the “sales page” for your book. Having your table of contents easily accessible, both in your digital book and on your website, will encourage more book sales and people will have a clear sense of what your book is about. On Amazon Kindle there is an option for people to view a sample of your book. Typically this will provide them with access to 10% of your book so you want to make the most of this opportunity.

Having a clearly laid out table of contents, that accurately illustrates the key points that your book covers, will attract readers and increase book sales.

When I am researching a topic or looking for a new book I pick up my Kindle eReader and head on over to Amazon to enjoy samples of books that I’m considering purchasing. Viewing book samples allows readers to view the table of contents, experience the author’s writing style, and get a sense of what the book is about.

Having an attractively formatted book is essential as that is another way for you to draw the reader in. Conversely, if your book is not well formatted, it could repel potential buyers. With this in mind, you want to make sure your book is well written and attractively formatted and that you have a compelling table of contents.

It is important to carefully craft your chapter titles and section titles as these are what make up the table of contents. Your table of contents can sell your book for you.

When composing chapter and section titles, use compelling, keyword-rich, phrases to attract your target audience and have them wanting to know more about your book.

While having cute or catchy chapter titles can be fun, you are better off having clear, compelling chapter titles and section titles that draw the reader in and have them wanting more.

When you are considering the purchase of a book, what factors come into play to help you decide whether or not to purchase a book?

Writing A Book: You’re Making It Too Hard

by Jeanette

One of the most common issues people have in writing a book is the writing. People who can send out 100 Tweets, write 20 emails, and post to Facebook 15 times suddenly find it hard to write.

It’s not that it’s hard to write. It’s that you have it in your head that when you “write a book” it must be all proper and perfect. Let’s dispel that myth right now – you don’t need to be perfect just because you’re writing a book.

So how do you make it easy to write a book? Here are five tips for making it easier to write any kind of piece – from the cheap research papers to a novel.

1. Set realistic expectations

Too often we enter the “writing a book” mindset thinking that our first book is going to be a best-seller and we’ll suddenly be rich and famous. It could happen.

But it’s much more likely that you will publish your book. It will help a lot of people. You’ll gain credibility and Read More→
