Marketing Lessons From Buying A New Car: Organization

by Jeanette
2013 Cadillac ATS

Jeanette’s New Car – Cadillac ATS

Author’s Note: I recently purchased a new car, trading in my 2002 Mitsubishi with 275,000 miles on it. Since this was the first car I had purchased in 20 years, I took my time, driving more than a dozen cars at as many dealerships. Along the way, I learned a few marketing lessons.

After visiting more than a dozen car dealerships in 10 days, one of the things I noticed is that they are all working too hard! And most of that is a result of not being organized.

I was appalled at the number of times, they could not find a car. For example, I saw a good-looking Chrysler 200 online, advertised by a particular dealer. I called the number on the ad. The salesman told me he would have to go out to the lot to locate the car – to see if they still had it! When he called me back, the car was not there. It had been loaned to a customer earlier in the day and wouldn’t be back until Monday. He just lost a potential sale.

On one lot after another, the salesman (we did not have one female dealer!) had to walk around looking for keys, looking for cars, looking for a temporary license plate so we could take a test drive. For one car we had to wait for him to go put gas in the car. Even then the low gas light was on throughout the test drive, making me a little nervous.

In one case we were told that the car we were interested in had just been sold. So the salesman went looking for a similar model. As he pulled the car up, it was the model we had asked about originally. Even though the computer “said” it has been sold, it hadn’t.

Understand that I am not a car sales professional. But look at restaurants and how easily they organize their business. Several restaurants we frequent have electronic status boards, showing which tables are occupied, which are clean and waiting for someone, and which tables need to be cleaned. It’s a very efficient, easily used system.

Surely car dealerships can implement systems similar to restaurants. Systems to track which cars are available and where they are parked on the lot. Systems to have temporary license plates readily available for test drives. Systems for having test cars gassed up, cleaned up and ready to drive.

So how do you apply this lesson on organization to your online business?

Visit your site as a stranger. Is it clear what to do? Once they sign up for your list, what do they see? When they buy a product, what happens? Where do they go? What do they get via email? How welcome do they feel?

You want your site visitors and customers to feel like you have prepared for them, not that you just showed up and decided to do business online. You want them to have a sense of safety and calm when doing business with you. It’s a matter of trust. And trust comes from the feeling that you know what you are doing – a sense of calm organization.

Operating your business in chaos, similar to a car dealership?

Are you able to put your hand on what you need when you need it? Do you have set procedures for accomplishing specific tasks? Do you have a marketing calendar telling you what to promote and when?

If you answered no to any of these questions, then you need Organize Your Online Business. It will take you by the hand and lead you to a sense of organization – for your writing, your buying, your marketing – everything you do in your online business. Don’t work harder than you need to. Get organized today!

Profitable Content Creation – What Happened After They Told Me I Couldn’t Write

by Jeanette

rejected writerEditor’s Note: I’ve known Jeff Herring for years, but had not heard this story. I can certainly identify with the pain of rejection!

My high school English teacher told me I was not a good writer – and I believed her! For years I told myself I couldn’t write. That is, until I started writing curriculum for a living! Not only did I find I could write, but I actually loved it. I had let someone else rob me of years of enjoyment.

Don’t let this happen to you! Read Jeff’s story and join us on the upcoming webinar.

Content Marketing is a great way to build your online business. The problem is that most people who teach it stop at the point of creating content. While creating profitable content is essential, there is so much more you can do with your content. That’s why I expand Content Marketing into the 5 things you need to be successful online in any niche: content creation, online visibility, traffic generation, list building and product creation.

A funny thing happened along the way

As some of you know, I never finished my Ph.D. in Marriage & Family Therapy back in the late 80’s/early 90’s. Have you ever been told you could not do something? If you’re anything like me, that just makes me want to do it all the more, if for no other reason than to prove them wrong.

Except this time when some of my dissertation committee told me I couldn’t write well at all, somehow that got in, and I took them at their word.

So if you believe you can’t write, you don’t finish your dissertation and you don’t get your Ph.D.

Then in 1994 I started writing a weekly column about relationships for the local paper that filled my private practice to overflowing. I must confess that I did get a kick out of having a full practice while others with a Ph.D. were struggling.

Not too long ago someone from the dissertation committee signed up for one of my Content Creation Workshops. That’s a day we still celebrate.

As author Richard Bach says “Argue for your limitations, and sure enough they’re yours.” I like to say, and sometimes accidentally change Bach’s quote into “argue for your limitations and you get to keep them.” Same message that is worth taking with you.

Bottom Line: Be careful, be very careful, about the limitations others, and especially you, try to put on you… and which ones you believe.

So what’s to be learned from all this? Here are a few learning points about writing and creating content:

1) As stated above, don’t accept, ever, the limitations others put on you. In fact don’t accept the limitations you put on yourself. They are oftentimes just beliefs – a feeling of certainty about something. It can be quite fun to challenge those limitations and prove them wrong.

2) I probably still couldn’t write academically if you held a gun to my head. And, fortunately, I don’t want or need to do so. The great news is I don’t have to and neither do you. All you need to do is write conversationally. In other words, simply write like you talk.

3) Number 2 works because prospects are attracted to your voice. Not the audio sound of your voice, but the way you approach and solve problems. That is your voice, and no one else can deliver it like you.

4) If you can write a 5 item grocery list, you can create profitable content based on your own expertise. You can then turn that content into a powerful presence on the web and be found all over your niche, generate lots of traffic visiting your profitable sites, build a highly qualified and responsive list community, and create profits by creating, marketing and offering information products based on your content.

The truth is I’ve been creating content to building my businesses, both offline (a thriving therapy practice from 1986 – 2006) and online (helping entrepreneurs build their online business with Content Marketing 2006 – NOW), since 1994.

And I want to bring those 18 years experience creating profitable content to you with this “How to Create Prospect & Profit Pulling Content in 20 Minutes or Less with Jeff Herring”  Hosted by Dr. Jeanette Cates on Thursday July 11th at 8 pm EDT – Join us here => http://JeffHerring.com/jeanette

Content Ideas: 3 Fixes When The Well Has Run Dry

by Jeanette

content ideasContent creation is a great way to bring in more prospects and profits. And you do want more prospects and profits, right?

The struggle for many content marketers, both new and experienced, is consistently coming up with ideas for creating content. I’ve noticed that many go through a few stages in their struggle to come up with content ideas.
Let’s take a closer look at those three stages and more importantly, what to do about each one.

Stage 1 – Ideas are not flowing – When you sit down to create content you have to repeatedly stop and think about what to write about. The flow has not stopped, it’s just not as easy as it normally is for you.

What to Do – Step back and brainstorm. Make a list of content ideas. Don’t edit – just brainstorm. This is something you need to be doing anyway, so you always have a list of content ideas from which to pull.

Stage 2 – Ideas are a struggle – Even when you look at a list of your ideas, nothing pops out for you. It feels like you are seeing the ideas on a list, but they are not making sense in your head, and not making the trip from your head to your fingers.

What to Do – Take a trip to your supermarket and check out the titles on the covers of the magazines in the checkout line. Thousands of dollars have been spent deciding how to title these articles. Find titles that you can use in your niche and get busy creating great content.

Stage 3 – You are beginning to believe in writer’s block, even though it does not exist. Ideas are not only not flowing, ideas are just plain stuck. Your frustration level is high, and you’re honestly getting a little bit frightened by your lack of ideas.

What to Do – Go to your topic in EzineArticles and look at some of the top articles in your niche. See which ones are getting lots of traffic. Choose an idea that you know will appeal to your community and simply do a better job with it.This is not plagiarism. This is research because you are simply looking for ideas. You are not copying what someone else has said, you are just going to do a better treatment of it because of your skills.

The Next Step – Your next success step is to grab your spot in our upcoming webinar “How to Create Prospect & Profit Pulling Content in 20 Minutes or Less with Jeff Herring” Hosted by Jeanette Cates on Thursday July 11th at 8 pm EDT – Join us here => Click Now To Reserve Your Seat

Content Curation Defined and Illustrated

by Jeanette

content curationOne of the joys of visiting a museum is knowing that the “curator” of the museum has chosen a theme, then put together the best possible collection of objects to follow that theme. The curator’s job is to shift through the thousands of pieces available – and choose the best.

Not only does it give the exhibit more meaning to you, but it also saves you time. After all, the curator has spent years building her expertise in order to get to the point where she is qualified to choose the items. So you save time in both building that expertise – and in looking through all of the information out there.

The same thing happens with “content curation”.

To understand more about Content Curation here are some of the leading resources on the topic:

Beth’s Content Creation Primer

Content curation is the process of sorting through the vast amounts of content on the web and presenting it in a meaningful and organized way around a specific theme.  The work  involves  sifting, sorting, arranging, and publishing information. Content curation is not about collecting links or being an information pack rat, it is more about putting them into a context with organization, annotation, and presentation.

12 Attributes of a Successful Content Curation Strategy

Here are twelve attributes your content curation strategy should have to insure success. Since content curation is editorial at its heart, you’ll see that many of these elements are similar to any other form of content publication.

14 Sources for Content Curation Inspiration

In a recent survey, 95 percent of marketers report that they are curating content in some shape or form. That totally makes sense, since 64 percent of B2B marketers reported that producing enough content was a challenge. Here are 14 third-party sources to consider if you are planning to curate content.

Market A Product By Catching The Attention Of Other Marketers

by Jeanette

Market a productCongratulations! You’ve just released your newest online course or product. Now it’s time to market your product. You’re promoting like crazy, but can always use more help in promotion. It would be particularly helpful to have other influential marketers in your niche promoting your course or product.

Here are some simple steps you can take to connect with marketers who are in a position to promote you and your product.

1. Go to an article directory and search for your keywords. Start with the top writers and click to see what they are promoting. Many times it’s a general site, rather than a specific product such as yours.

2. Comment on their article, offering a real comment, not just a “good article” comment. Use the URL for your product as your comment link.

This is effective because most authors don’t get many comments on their articles. So when they are notified that someone has commented on their article, it will stand out.

3. Repeat this process with 5 articles per day. This isn’t something you want to spend your day on. It’s just a way to get your name and your product in front of influential people in your niche.

4. Write an article per day for the next week, adding them to your blog. Do your usual blog post promotion – tweet, facebook, Pinterest, email to your list. Encourage them to leave comments.

5. Search for blogs who are posting on the topic of your product. Again go to their blog posts and comment, using your product’s URL.

6. Follow the market leaders on Facebook and other social media. When the newest social media is hot, follow them early. Again, the idea is to get your name in front of them as a fellow market leader.

7. Contact them directly through their help desk. There is a strong chance that an email to them will get lost. But their help desk will at least receive your request. Be sure you have crafted that message to ask for exactly what you want and to make them an offer they can’t refuse. Introduce yourself. Say how you found them (bought your products, following your blog, etc). State what you are offering. Would love to get their help in promoting it in exchange for…

8. Attend live events. Nothing takes the place of meeting someone face-to-face. And live events are where the movers and shakers are. You need to be there, too.

9. Don’t be shy. Whether it’s contacting them online or going up to introduce yourself at an event, you have to step out of your comfort zone and extend your hand.

10. Keep marketing. No other marketer is as passionate about your product as you are. Whether they help promote it or not will not determine your success. You are the one in charge of that!

Blog Promotion Infographic

by Jeanette

One of the most helpful things to come out of the “visual marketing” emphasis is Infographics. Initially they were big fancy poster size that only a graphic artist could create. But we’re seeing a trend toward more simplified infographics.

The infographic I’ve included here is a good example. While it still looks professional, it’s something that you “could” do yourself, using a simple graphics program – or even your word processor or HTML editor.

So start thinking about what YOU could create an infographic on – and enjoy the well-planned, attractively-delivered information on this infographic.

Earn Money from Your Blog: 10 Easy Ways

by Jeanette

How do you make money from your blog?

Most people start a blog with the idea of sharing content. They don’t have any  monetization plan in mind. While  it’s always easier if you’re clear on how you will earn money from the beginning, this is a situation that can be easily corrected.

To give you some ideas, here are 10 straightforward ways you can earn money from you blog:

1. Affiliate Marketing: A common choice for many is to go the affiliate marketing route by earning commissions through recommending products. Many bloggers place ads in their side bars, at the bottom of posts and so forth, but the affiliates who make the most money make product recommendations directly to their audience. They write about products, recommend relevant products in their posts and so forth.

2. Product Sponsorship – Sponsorship is a similar concept to advertising, but in many cases, no money exchanges hands. Instead, bloggers are treated to free product in return for mentioning their product, running a giveaway and so forth. Many large and small companies are actively looking for the opportunity to reach their target audience through bloggers, so there is plenty of opportunity to enjoy a variety of perks.

3. Sell Advertising: Many bloggers capitalize on their traffic by selling advertising for their blog. This works well for high traffic blogs that can attract high paying advertisers. It is often the choice of bloggers who don’t want to do any selling on their blog and want to focus solely on content. Still, there is selling involved in attracting advertisers and there is plenty of work involved in serving advertising clients.

4. Sponsored Posts – Like successful bloggers, many companies understand that the most premium ad space on a blog is the blog post itself. Sure, you can put ad banners in your sidebar, but those are most likely to be ignored because people focus on your content. That’s why many companies are willing to pay for the opportunity to post on your blog. Sponsored posts are usually more commercial in nature, but as the blog owner, you ultimately decide which posts you will accept and which you won’t.

5. Bolster Your Product Sales – If you already have an existing online business where you sell your own products, a blog can be the perfect complement to this. Engaging your audience, building a more loyal relationship and educating them on your product is a win-win for everyone.

6. Ebooks and Info Products – If you’re into blogging, chances are you love writing. This is the perfect path to creating your own information products and ebooks. You can sell them on your website, through Kindle, Smashwords and more. If your blog readers love your content, they’ll love to get even more that they can add to their mobile device and take wherever they go.

7. Contextual Advertising – You’ve probably heard of Google Adsense and Chitika. These are advertising networks that display content on your pages. The ads displayed are related to the topics of your specific blog posts…thus, the term “contextual”. Working with an ad network means you don’t have to find your own advertisers and you don’t have to deal with client service either. It’s all taken care of by the ad network and you get a percentage of the profits. Or you can maximize your revenue by displaying contextual ads and accepting advertisers on your blog as well.

Adsense and Chitika

8. Blogging for Pay – One of the simplest ways to start earning money from blogging right away is to simply be a blogger for hire. It’s a guaranteed way to get paid for your work, but it doesn’t have the scalability that doing your own blogging does over time. After all, as a blogger for pay, you only get paid when you blog and most jobs don’t pay incredibly well. Still, it’s a great place to get started and start earning money almost right away.

9. Feeding Traffic to a Mailing List – You may have heard the term, “the money is in list” and it’s absolutely true. Growing your own email subscribers list ensures that you have a growing audience of people that you can keep in touch with over and over again. Many bloggers keep their focus on content on their blog and simply funnel people into the mailing list, so they can make offers and sell products via email. Email marketing is an important topic, so we’ll definitely be talking about it in a later post.

10. Speaking – While many bloggers prefer to communicate with their fingertips to the keyboard, many also have a very commanding presence and enjoy speaking to audiences. Speaking is definitely a good skill to cultivate as it can be very profitable. Whether you run your own webinars or speak at various live events, having an active blog following can help you bring more people to your speaking events and increase your income.

Certainly, this isn’t an exhaustive list of the possible ways to profit from a blog because every blogger and business is different, but it gives you plenty of ideas to get started. You might just use one idea to start with, but most successful bloggers use a combination of a few or more monetization opportunities. The key is to start exploring ideas, testing them out and further developing those methods that work for you.
