Business Is One At A Time

by Jeanette

Rudy's BBQ Austin
We had lunch at Rudy’s today. It’s a great Texas BBQ place with big ole picnic tables outside. Paper towels serve as “napkins” and the condiments are in a box on the table. You can smell the BBQ all through lunch – and if you sit in the right place, you can feel the barbeque, because that’s the pit fireplace. Overall, it’s a great experience – and one of my favorite barbeques.

It was during lunch that I noticed their motto: To become world famous by delighting one customer at a time.

And naturally I thought about how that applies to online business. WE need to be serving one customer at a time, regardless of how many are on our list, how many are coming to our blog or website, how many we sell. Because business comes down to serving one person at a time.

  • So the next time you write a blog post, ask yourself – who is the ONE person I’m talking to?
  • The next time you send an email broadcast, ask – who is the ONE person who is reading this?
  • And the next time you create a product, ask – How can I better explain to ONE person why they need this product?

When you keep the focus on one person at a time, like Rudy’s, you’ll become world-famous!

Marketing With The Herd

by Jeanette

Have you ever seen a herd of horses as they change direction? It’s like watching a wave being blown from one direction to another.

And that’s exactly the image I got this morning as I was checking my email. The “herd” of marketers are touting Product X today. They’ve switched directions away from Product Y – that was the hottest thing since sliced bread last week.

And every week you can watch “the herd” – as they stampede from promoting one product to the next. It’s rather funny to watch – if you’re not being trampled in the stampede!

Too many of us tend toward the Bright Shiny Object syndrome – and find ourselves overloaded with one product after another. Even if we stopped buying we wouldn’t be able to get through all of the “shelfware” we’ve already accumulated!

That’s why I want to help YOU head it off at the pass (in Western talk) with the five questions you need to ask BEFORE you buy any information product.

You can pick up a copy of those five questions on page 4 of the May issue of Online Success News. It’s FREE and it’s waiting for you at OnlineSuccessNews.com

How hard do you work?

by Jeanette

If someone asked you how hard you work when you’re working for an employer, what would you say?

If a large company hired you to work on a week-long consulting project and paid you a hefty fee when it was finished – how many hours per day would you work to finish the project?

When I was an elearning consultant I was often hired by large companies to come to their location and work for a week to establish their elearning portal and training program. During the time I was onsite, I was working 10,12, sometimes 16 hours a day. I was totally focused on the task. Because we knew we had a week to get it done.

Those were the client’s expectations. And I knew there was a great reward at the end.

I turned off my cell phone. I would have turned off text messages if they had invented them at that time! I only checked my messages and email in the evenings.

I took care of myself physically, taking planned breaks, walking around to freshen my mind, and eating at regular intervals. And I drank a lot of caffeine. (Okay, you knew there had to be a vice in there!)

The point is I was 100% focused on the outcome. And I was willing to work very hard for a short time because I knew the rewards would be there.

This was all brought back to me recently as I spent a week onsite for a client – just like the old days. But in this case it was an internet marketing client. I spent 8-10 hours a day looking at sales materials, writing autoresponders, and generally fixing up their sales and support process.

And that’s when it occurred to me – I haven’t been working for ME as hard as I worked for THEM!

Sometimes I don’t “get around” to writing a full autoresponder sequence. Sometimes I don’t revisit older products that can be updated and repurposed. Sometimes I don’t streamline and document all of my processes. And many times I don’t focus 100% on a single task until it’s finished. In short, sometimes I get lazy with my own business.

So now it’s your turn. Are you working on your own business – as if you were a paid consultant? Would you pay YOU big bucks to do the work you’re doing?

We’ll talk about WHY you aren’t working as hard for you in an upcoming post. For now, share – are you working as hard for yourself as you would if someone else were paying you?

Should I Buy This Product?

by Jeanette

3dQuestionSave Money And Reduce Information Overload

One of the exciting things about doing business online is the rapidly changing landscape. There are new technologies, new tactics, and new  products coming onto the market daily. It’s a constant parade of new offers.

But do you need the latest and greatest offering? Or will it just become “shelfware?” Here are five questions to ask yourself before you purchase the next product that arrives in your inbox.

1. Does this fit my business model? If your primary business model is split between consulting and selling your own info products, you may not need the “hot” new Private Label Rights product. Regardless of how easy it sounds, how much passive revenue you can earn or how few copies are left, if it doesn’t fit into your business model – skip it.

2. Is this truly a time-sensitive offer? Scarcity – a limited quantity, or short time limit – is one of the most effective means for closing a sale, so it is often used in online sales letters. A “real deadline” is the early bird  price for a conference or the start of a teleseminar series. And while “the  price goes up at midnight” may be compelling, don’t buy just to beat the  deadline.

Buying something you don’t need or don’t have time to use will cost more in the long run than what you would save on beating the deadline. One of the techiques I use is to print all sales letters that interest me. Then I read them away from the computer where I can’t click immediately. This delay helps the rational thinking process and avoids that panicky clicking.

3. Do I have time to implement this? If you can see an opening in this week’s schedule that gives you time to read the ebook, re-label the product, watch the videos and take the resulting action, then it might be a good  product to purchase. But most people 1) don’t set aside time to implement in  the first 48 hours after purchase and 2) may consume the materials, but fail  to take action. This is how “shelfware” is created!

4. How will I implement this? A well-written sales letter will provide enough detail that you can write a plan for consuming the product and taking action. Will you need to learn a process? See how many hours of videos are provided – then double that time for learning the material. Look at the length of the ebook, then based on your reading speed, figure out how long you’ll need to consume it.

Then take a further guess at the number of hours you will need to take the action. You don’t want to walk around as a Smart Marketer who knows a lot. You want to be a Rich Marketer – and that requires action. So at least double the learning time for the action phase.

Finally, write out your plan. Once the first rush of excitement has passed about all of the great “stuff” you have bought, you may forget why you invested in it. So while you’re really excited about it – before you click the order  button – have your written plan ready.

5. What’s the return on my investment? It’s not just your money, it’s your time. What else will you be neglecting to implement this new product? What will that cost you, both in terms of rest and relationships? If you fully follow your plan and invest the hours you know you need to properly implement it, how soon will you see the increase in revenue (or decrease in expenses)?  How much can you realistically expect to earn? Now divide that by the number of hours in your implementation plan. Is it worth it?

While these questions won’t stop you from purchasing the tools and knowledge you need for your business, they will help you avoid excess purchases that leave you feeling guilty and overwhelmed. Be an “Action Consumer.” Resolve to never purchase again without answering these five questions.

Scheduling Blog Posts

by Jeanette

Obviously the blog posts are coming hot and heavy this week as the 30-Day Blog Challenge wraps up. And those of us in the Mini 7 Challenge are playing catch-up. For example, in my case I needed to write 10 blog posts in 5 days!

After the blog challenge, things go back to “normal.” But what IS normal? There are several schools of thought on posting to your blog, so let’s review the most common models.

As you think it. Many people look upon their blog as a journal – and post accordingly. If there is something they want to share, they do so. If they are busy and don’t have any ideas to share, they don’t. That’s essentially what I’ve been doing for the past few days – posting as the ideas emerge.

Timed release. Under this model, a blog owner releases a new blog post on a schedule. My friend Robert Plank does this very effectively. Every few weeks he releases a new blog post. For at least 3 days before he posts it, he sends email to his lists, telling them it’s coming. Great teasing emails.

I’ve been known to set a reminder on my computer to be sure I rush over to read his post as soon as it’s released. Why? Because he closes comments! He was the first person I know of to do this – and it has worked beautifully for him. Now he closes comments at 100 – and if you want to be part of the first 100, you need to rush over when he posts the new article.

Marketing tool. For many marketers a blog is just another marketing tool. They publish well-planned articles on their blog, promoting their products. There is little interaction on the blog because it’s primarily a one-way communication medium.

So where are you going from here? Which model will you use and how often will you post AFTER the blog challenge? What will be your new Normal?

Perfectionism Is Not Profitable

by Jeanette

For years, I thought that I and everything I did needed to be perfect. After all, my parents had told me I was a “perfect” child. Just because I was over 40 didn’t mean that anything needed to change!

So I’d write an article in less than 30 minutes – then spend 3 days editing it. Even then it would sit on my hard drive for another week or two, just “aging” like a fine wine – as if that would make it even better. Finally, several weeks after my quick 30-minute article was ready, I would submit it to an article distribution service – then sweat for weeks in fear someone might find fault with it.

Of course, I know “no one” else has ever had that experience!

So how much is perfectionsim costing you? After all, if you persist and insist on everything being perfect, it will take you 20 times longer to get the word out about your product; 20 times longer to create the product; and 400 times longer to make a profit! You see, the pain of perfectionism is exponential.

So how do you get over your perfectionism? Share your ideas here and we’ll all conquer this together!

Negativity and Success

by Jeanette

One of the challenges we all face is the negative input around us. It was brought home to me today as I sat in a waiting room. Some of the comments I heard included:

“You just can’t win.”

“There’s never a solution.”

“I can’t believe how bad it is. Let me tell you…”

“That never works out.”

And I was there less than 10 minutes! I can tell you, I was depressed by the time they called my name for my escape.

Turns out I’ve gotten spoiled hanging around positive people all the time. People who are excited about life. Going somewhere. Have a dream. Sharing good news and great thoughts.

And those are exactly the type of people YOU want to be around as you’re building your online business. Starting a business from scratch is a lot of hard work and it’s tempting to become discouraged. That’s why it’s so important to be surrounded by positive.

If you’re surrounded by negativity all the time, it’s a challenge to find the positive. That’s why I love entrepreneurs – especially the ones online.

So where do you find the positive input you need to keep pursuing your dream? Right here, online. You’ll find many of them making comments below. You’ll find links to their blogs and websites. You’ll find them in groups like the Blog Challenge.

Because birds of a feather DO flock together. And positive people want to spend time with other positive people. Whether we do it online – or at live events – join us! Your life will be better for it.
