So I’m shopping for holiday gifts and adding a few things to my wishlist at Amazon, when I notice I can use their Wishlist plugin on Firefox to add ANYthing from ANY site to my wishlist.
My first thought: How generous of them to share their wishlist space with other vendors.
After all, it makes it easy for me to keep track of all the things I want for myself as well as those things I’m shopping for for others. It’s all in one place.
My second thought: Brilliant! They are building a list of what people WANT and where they FOUND it. Talk about getting some great market intelligence. And they didn’t even have to pay any researchers to get the information!
I suspect when I go to buy the items on my wishlist I may find that some of them just “happen” to be available on Amazon. 🙂
Now how can you adapt this to YOUR Online Business? What if you could have insight into what people are buying?
One easy way comes to mind: TheClickBankStore.com
Here you can search by keyword, see the best sellers, see the movers and shakers. It’s a great resource that you may have overlooked. And it provides you with the same type of data that Amazon is tracking – what people want and what they are buying.
So the next time you see a good idea in practice from a large online retailer, ask yourself – how can I apply this to MY business?
Seen any other brilliant tactics lately? Share them here…

Thanks Jeanette – great tip about amazon and how to convert that to my own web. Audrey
That is awesome.
Watching “what” other companies are doing and then figuring out “why” is a priceless tip for all of us.
Chances are if you see a successful business doing something strange, there is a great lesson to be applied in our own.

Always brilliant and always looking out for us! Thanks for this great idea.

How “Macy’s” of them, I bet someone at Gimbels ops I mean Amazone had been watching Miracle on 34th street, and the idea popped into their head. You are so right, watch the big boys and girls and learn. Ideas are everywhere but catching them is another matter. Thanks for sharing these tools with us.
William – your Macys & Gimbels reference is so appropo for the season!
Terrie – you are so generous. Thank you.
Lance – I agree – the what is so visible – it’s the why that is profitable.
Audrey – glad it was helpful. Share with us how you’re going to use it when you’re ready.
You were shopping Amazon through a marketer’s eyes!
There’s a whole other world of reasons for marketers to spend time on Amazon and you just uncovered one of them! : )
As an expert in the Amazon marketplace, one of the ‘insider secrets’ I’ll share is that Amazon, behind all the retail flash and splash is a brilliant technology company and market data research company.
And you are 100% right Jeanette, once they know that someone is looking for a product – they will either find it themselves and/or put the word out to their 3rd party sellers that the product is in demand.
And they will have the product next time you (or the next person) look for it!
