The 30-Day Blog Challenge is exactly what it sounds like – writing at least one blog post per day for 30 days. Originated in 2009 by Connie Ragen Green, this is the fifth Blog Challenge.
It will run for the 30 days of June. In order to participate you need:
- A blog (we recommend Wordpress, but any type of blog will do)
- A desire to build your traffic, content and confidence by writing 30 blog posts
Here are the guidelines for the Blog Challenge:
- You must post to your blog daily. You can post more often if you like, but you must have 30 posts in 30 days to qualify. (Note that you can join after June 1 – just start from where you are.)
- Each blog post should be at least 150 written words. You can use audio or video, but they will not count as a blog post unless accompanied by the words.
- All blog posts must be made to the same blog.
- You must tweet each blog post to @JeanetteCates – with your post title, URL and the suffix #blog30 so that others will know you have posted to your blog each day.
- You are strongly encouraged to look at other participants’ blogs – and add comments to their posts.
- Your blog must be “family friendly.”
- Your name must be on your blog so that we can easily identify it as yours.
- You must sign up to participate in the Blog Challenge. Once signed up you will be taken to the “member site” for Blog Challenge participants where you can post your profile. This will facilitate communication among participants – and also provide you with an instructional course on making the most of the Blog Challenge.

Jeanette, I had no idea there is so much I can and have to say. I just came to check where we are in the 30 days, and I am just getting comfortable, and the quality of my articles is starting to get to the level where I am pleased with it.
What a great idea? Anyone picking up the baton and host the next 30-day blog challenge? I could do it, it doesn’t look like there is a lot of work involved on the top of writing, tweeting, and enjoying the extra visitors, the extra comments, the extra traffic and exposure.
Let me know.

Sophie – so glad you’ve enjoyed the 30-day Blog challenge! I’ve consistently heard that people “find their voice” when having to blog for 30 days in a row.
There WILL be more blog challenges, I’m sure, but everyone has requested a breather and I agree. Naturally anyone can run a blog challenge at any time – there’s no restriction on who hosts one. The issue is critical mass. If you only have 20-30 people participating, you don’t have the broad reach that you have when you have hundreds getting involved. If you’re considering hosting a blog challenge in your marketplace, I would encourage you to start with a mini7 to get people new to the concept a sense of achievement.
And while it may appear effortless, a blog challenge is a LOT of work and time off your plate. Yes, there are rewards of more traffic, comments and visitors, but participants enjoy that as well. I estimate I and my staff spent 2-3 hours per day working on blog challenge related items. If you have that type of time to give, then you can definitely consider running a large blog challenge. From the organizer’s perspective, it’s about giving back to the community. There is no direct profit because no one signs up to be sold to. It’s about service.
